Overview
FUN FOCUSED TRAINING
On the competitive pathway, training sessions start to lean more into tactics, while still covering all the core soccer skills players need. Practices are focused and enjoyable, with an emphasis on learning the game and building overall fitness in a way that fits where players are at physically. A good warm-up, cool-down, and some flexibility work round things out, helping players stay healthy and feel their best out on the field.
How often a team practices depends on age group. Some teams practice twice a week, others three times, depending on what’s right for that age level. Practices are held right here in Cochrane at our local soccer fields.
Families choosing this travel program should know this comes with some added commitment: games and tournament play in the City of Calgary, along with practices here at home in Cochrane.
We also believe kids need a break from the game now and then. Playing year-round isn’t the goal here, so our program builds in seasonal breaks along the way. Research backs this up too. Young athletes benefit from having regular days off from organized training each week, and taking time away from organized sport at season’s end helps with both physical and mental recovery while lowering the risk of burnout. We keep this in mind so players stay excited about soccer for years to come, not just this season.
COMPETITITVE
COACHING STANDARDS
Format: 7 v 7
Our competitive teams are proudly led by volunteer coaches, and we want families to know just how much skill and dedication that involves. At every level Cochrane Wolves FC competes at, our standard is for coaches to be trained through Alberta Soccer Association’s provincial coaching education pathway, the same coaching pathway relied on across Calgary and Alberta, and indeed across Canada, at this level of play. This training gives coaches the tools to keep players safe while developing their game the right way. Our Competitive coaches don’t stop there either: they continue building their craft through regular coaching clinics and seminars guided by our Cochrane Wolves FC Technical Leads. It’s a system built on genuine passion for the game and a real commitment to doing right by every player, and it’s what makes volunteer coaching at this level so effective.
Players are also encouraged to bring good focus and follow their coach’s guidance, both at practice and on their own. It’s a great way to build skills and character, and it sets a solid foundation as they keep growing in the game.
Environment
Positive, enthusiastic and fun. The atmosphere we create is not separate from development, it is the condition for it. Players who feel supported take more risks, make more mistakes, and ultimately learn more from them.
Game Based Training
Training sessions revolve around the game. Small-sided games built around realistic scenarios allow players to experience and develop decision-making, technique and problem-solving.
Behaviours
We work to build habits that serve players on and off the field: integrity, accountability, respect and the continued discipline to work through challenges help us prepare players for life!
Player Health
We plan programming with the whole athlete in mind. Just as important is time away from the sport. Players who enjoy their football and have space outside of it stay in the game longer and develop further.
